And so the surf kayak and waveski competition calendar has kicked off again.
In mid march we had our first ranking competition of the year.
Competitors looking to make the team for this years big events, Waveski Worlds, Home Internationals and also next years Surf Kayak World Championships all turned up to strut their stuff.
Originally planned for Spanish point, a quick location change was made on the morning to avail of better surf in Doughmore, Co.Clare.
Small surf and long wave periods made wave selection just as important as milking the wave to get the best out of it.
Despite the weak waves, competitors made the most of them, still getting their craft through the lip for big top turns and tail slashes, and some trying end moves also.
Both Short boat and Waveski heats were tough with waves hard to catch, but those that stayed patient and picked the right waves were rewarded with long rides and snappy turns.
Things were a little easier for the long boats, and the slow rolling waves and close out lips really suited their style, some excellent top turns and close out moves were on show.
Competitors from all age groups, skills and every corner of the country were there on the day surfing together.
The day stayed sunny, if not so warm, which lent to a great buzz.
Roll on the next comp :)
