Sit-On-Tops and How They Work
Sit-on-top kayaks sit you above the hull rather than inside it. There is no cockpit, no spray deck, and no need to learn wet exits. If you capsize, you simply right the kayak and climb back on. For that reason, they are the default choice for beginners, families, coastal touring and kayak fishing in Ireland.
All sit-on-tops have self-draining scupper holes moulded into the hull, meaning any water that washes over the deck drains straight through.
Choosing between Single and Tandem
Single sit-on-top kayaks are the most versatile option. They range from compact beach boats like the Islander Koa, ideal for harbours and sheltered bays, through to longer performance models like the RTM Disco and Wilderness Systems Tarpon for coastal touring and fitness paddling.
Tandem sit-on-top kayaks carry two or more paddlers and are popular with families. Models like the Islander Paradise II and Wilderness Systems Tarpon 130T can be paddled solo just as easily as with a partner - a useful flexibility when the kids decide they want to be passengers.
Sit-On-Top Kayaks for Fishing
Several models are designed specifically for kayak fishing on rivers, lakes and inshore coastal waters. Look for features like flush-mounted rod holders, anchor trolley attachment points and wider beams for stability when casting. The Islander Strike Angler and RTM Abaco 3.60 are strong starting points.
